Ravitch, M.D. Endowed Professorship in Surgery and leads the Department of Surgery's Colorectal Service. Dr. Efron received his BA from Franklin and Marshall College in 1989 where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and cum laude in biology with a minor in classics. In 1993, he received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a resident in general surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and then completed a clinical fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, Florida. Dr. Efron is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery.

Rozycki, MD, MBA, FACS is Professor of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine and Director of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care at Grady Memorial Hospital for Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Rozycki is also Vice Chairman, Academic Administration, for the Department of Surgery at Emory University. Dr. Rozycki received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1980 and, after completion of surgical residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville, completed a Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Paul H. Sugarbaker is the Director of Surgical Oncology at Washington Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He is a specialist in the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma using a combination of cytoreductive surgery with intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapy. P. Terry Phang M.D. M.Sc. F.R.C.S.C F.A.C.S. F.A.B.C.R.S. | Dr. Phang is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of British Columbia. His medical training was received at the University of Toronto. He received surgical training at Memorial University of Newfoundland and specialized colorectal surgery training at the University of Minnesota in 1996-97. He holds American Board certification for Surgery and Colorectal Surgery. He has a Masters of Science degree in biochemistry and clinical research training in critical illness and colorectal surgery. Dr. Phang's current research includes diagnostic imaging of rectal cancer, advanced techniques of rectal cancer surgery including laparoscopy, sphincter-preserving rectal cancer resection, and transanal microsurgery. He has taught many surgeons in British Columbia and Canada on rectal cancer and laparoscopic colon surgery, and many medical students and family physicians on colorectal diseases. He is leader of the British Columbia Cancer Agency Surgical Oncology Network committee on rectal cancer that has the mandate of improving outcomes for rectal cancer through programmatic development in BC. |

Born in Liverpool, England, Brian Day graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1970. After postgraduate studies in England, in both internal medicine and general surgery, he came to the University of British Columbia for a residency in orthopedics. In 1978, following a trauma fellow-ship in Switzerland, England and Los Angeles, he began his medical practice at the Vancouver General Hospital and the University of British Columbia (UBC). It was there that he developed his interest and expertise in orthopedic sports medicine and arthroscopy. Chair of the resident academic program for UBC's Department of Orthopedics from 1978 to 1994, he has been a part-time associate professor at UBC since 1987. Dr. Day has chaired several international seminars on arthroscopic surgery, and from 1989 to 1994 he chaired the orthopedic test commit-tee for Canada's Royal College of Surgeons. In demand as a visiting professor and lecturer, his academic teaching has taken him throughout Canada and the United States, as well as to many other countries. His publications include more than 100 scientific articles and book chapters in areas of orthopedics, arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He has been active on the editorial boards and committees of several scientific and medical journals, including the British Columbia Medical Journal. He has along-standing interest in technology and medicine. He co-authored a paper on electronic medical records in 1979, and in 1985, was a co-developer of the world’s first surgical robot. He was also one of 2 participants in the first-ever live satellite telemedicine broadcast between North America and mainland China. In 1995, Dr. Day founded the Cambie Surgery Centre, a private surgical facility. He has written more than 25 articles and lectured throughout North America on health policy issues. Dr. Day is the founder and a past president of the Canadian Independent Medical Clinics Association. His long association with the Canadian Orthopedic Association started early in his career when in 1979 he received COA's Edouard Samson Award for outstanding research by a young investigator. A member of the COA board of directors and chair of its membership committee from 1987 to 1998, he also was vice-president of the Canadian Orthopedic Foundation (1989–93) and a member of the executive of the Canadian Orthopedic Research Society (1992–94). He is a former research committee chair and past president of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the world's leading academic society in his field of practice. Dr. Day was only the second Canadian to serve as president of the AANA. In 2001, he was the 80th annual Osler Lecturer for the Vancouver Medical Association and, in 2004; he was made an honorary member of the Cuban Orthopedic Association. Dr. Day has 6 children. Dr. Walton is a pediatric general surgeon with special interest in minimal access surgery. Dr. Walton completed his postgraduate medical training at Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia in the specialty of General Surgery, after which he trained in Pediatric Surgery at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa. He was the Program Director for the General Surgery Training Program at McMaster University from 1999 to 2004, and also Director of the Pediatric Trauma Program. He is now the Assistant Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education since August 2004. Dr. Walton is an Associate Professor at McMaster University, Department of Surgery and Department of Pediatrics. In addition to his surgical practice, his research interests include minimal access surgery in pediatric population as well as educational research. Dr. Sherif Hanna, MD, FRCSC, FACSHead, Division of Surgical Oncology Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgical Oncology Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre
Dr. Sherif S. Hanna is a surgical oncologist with special interest in Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgical Oncology. Dr. Hanna completed his postgraduate medical training at the University of Toronto in the specialty of General Surgery, after which he trained in surgical oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital for one year. He subsequently trained in liver surgery in Denver, Colorado for a year and Atlanta, Georgia for 6 months. He returned to the University of Toronto to join the staff of Sunnnybrook & Women’s College Health Sciences Centre in January 1980 where he remains to this day. From 1992-2002 he served as the Head of the Div of General Surgery at Sunnybrook & Women’s. In July 2001 he was appointed as the Head of Surgical Oncology at Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre, which is now fully integrated with S&WHSC. Dr. Hanna is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, Department Of Surgery. Dr Michael Marcaccio is currently Chief of Surgery at Hamilton Health Sciences and Professor of Surgery at McMaster University. He completed his undergraduate training and surgical residency at McMaster. His fellowship training in Hepatobiliary Surgery & Surgical Endoscopy included training periods in Salisbury UK, Düsseldorf Germany, New Orleans and Toronto. His clinical practice is based at McMaster University Medical Centre where he has a busy practice focused on disorders of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas and surgical endoscopy. His current research interests are in the areas of laparoscopic splenectomy, and evaluation of patients with pancreatic cancer. He has 33 peer reviewed publications and presentations. He has considerable administrative experience with further training at the Harvard School of Public Health, and became the youngest person to be Chief of Surgery of a major teaching hospital in Canada in 1993. More recently Dr Marcaccio has garnered fame as the surgeon who operated on Gordon Lightfoot. He has also been the featured surgeon on the Life Networks TV show "The Surgeons". Gordon | Montreal | Dr. Gordon is a Professor of Surgery, Director of the Section of Colorectal Surgery, and Professor of Oncology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He also serves as Vice Chairman, Senior Surgeon, and Director of Clinical Teaching Unit, Department of Surgery at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis - Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Canada.Dr. Gordon earned his M.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and completed his internship and residencies in surgery and pathology at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis - Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh. He completed his colorectal surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota and served as an honorary assistant in surgery at St. Mark's Hospital in London, England. Dr. Gordon has authored or co-authored 120 medical articles and published chapters in more than 30 medical textbooks. He is the co-author of four textbooks, including the gold-standard textbook, Principles and Practice of Surgery for the Colon, Rectum and Anus. A Past President of both the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Dr. Gordon currently serves on the Advisory Council for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He has provided expert analysis and commentary to the media, including CBC-TV and CTV. He is involved in a busy clinical practice and has expertise on a wide range of colorectal disorders and topics. Dr. Gordon has served on the Editorial Board of "Diseases of the Colon and Rectum" and "Perspectives of Colon and Rectal Surgery" and is currently on the Editorial Board of "Ostomy Quarterly" and "Italian Journal of Colo-Proctology." He is a reviewer for "British Journal of Surgery", "Canadian Journal of Surgery," "International Journal of Colorectal Disease," "Surgical Endoscopy," "Cancer," "Annals of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada", "Surgical Laparoscopy, Endoscopy and Percutaneous Techniques," "Archives of Physiology and Biochemistry," and "Archives of Surgery."
